Post-doctoral Research Position in Climate Modeling

CIEP Miércoles 9 de Agosto del 2017 Noticias

The Center for Investigation in Patagonian Ecosystems (CIEP), together with the Geophysics Department of the University of Chile, is seeking a post-doctoral researcher focusing on the regional climate trends and climate modeling in the Chilean-Argentinean Patagonia (40° to 55°S). The overall objective is to evaluate recent trends in ENSO and SAM drivers and their explicit effects on the Patagonian climate and environment. Initial project objectives may include updating existing regional models (2006-present) using recent meteorological and hydrological data, analysis of spatial and temporal trends in local hydro-meteorological observations, potential incorporation of recent remote sensing products, and contribution to research and publications by local investigators along common lines of eco-climatology. The post-doctoral investigator will also contribute to a multidisciplinary collaborative research effort across North and South America, Project SAFER ( - Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research, a National Science Foundation initiative), and a pending proposal for a Patagonian Eco-Climatology laboratory.

Pre-requisites: We will consider all qualified international or national applicants. Must be proficient in English, with recent PhD or candidacy, with demonstrated experience in any combination of meteorology and numerical modeling (preferred), and/or hydrology, limnology/oceanography. The postdoctoral investigator will be under the technical supervision of Dr. Rene Garreaud (U. de Chile, Santiago), and local supervision by Dr. Brian Reid (Centro CIEP, Coyhaique). Starting salary for the first year is equivalent to a CONICYT Post-doctoral salary (1.500.000 $Ch gross monthly), with additional funding for travel, project costs, training and workshops, and strong possibility of extension for 2-3 additional years.

Applicants should present current CV, references, copies of relevant publications, highlights of any previous experience in Chile or Argentina, together with a brief research proposal for year 1 (background, hypothesis, objectives and general work plan).
